Making the Internet a Child-Friendly Venue

The Internet is a very useful tool for child rearing. At a very early age, children can learn many different things with the help of the Internet. However, what most parents are extremely concerned with is the issue of safety on the Web. As advanced as the Internet's technology is, it can pose a threat to children who are left surfing the Web on their own. Hence, it is the responsibility of parents and other adults in the family to look after the children at all times whenever they are online.

There are special applications, parental control software, or programmes that offer security to young users. Such applications filter websites that may potentially have offensive or harmful materials that can corrupt innocent children's minds. They may also block pop-up windows, which can be advertising websites with pornographic or violent content, or worse, malicious software that harm infected computers.

Aside from security suites, parents should also explain to their children the importance of knowing their limitation. Fostering respect, civility, and dignity to children even on the Web will help them grow to be better citizens of the world. By doing so, children shall not only be safer, but they will also become more constructive and productive while surfing on the Internet.

Although older children may feel that security measures are a form of invasion to their privacy, parents have the right and responsibility to let them understand the purpose for doing so. By making them understand the importance of safety on the Web, children will also develop a level of respect for such tool and thus, avoiding any unnecessary activity.
